BIBLE STORIES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
Many of the stories in the New Testament center around people placed in situations of testing. They offer hope through faith. These great stories provide patterns that we read and learn from, like in the story of Lazarus the Beggar.
I especially am fond of the story of Lazarus the Beggar because it opens so many windows from yesteryear that lead into our modern world. Poor Lazarus - no fine clothes, no food; he begged for those crumbs that fell from the rich man's table.
Aren't you glad that we don't have to buy our way into heaven?
Lazarus lived a hard life - if you could call it life. There was definitely no quality to his life - or then again, was there? Oh yes there was! Although Lazarus didn't have things of this world, he obviously had a relationship with God.
The story of Lazarus the Beggar demonstrates that we don't go to heaven just because we are poor, no more than we'd go to heaven because we're rich. God just doesn't work that way.
That one can be homeless, poor and disdained by others while being the apple of God's eye is a pretty special thing.
