THE ROLLING STONES
Sometimes, it takes a boy to do a man's job. Such was the case with David and Goliath.
The lad collected five stones to do the job, although it only took one stone. Five is generally symbolic of 'grace' in the Bible. The number 'one' is generally represented as God. Whenever God and Grace are mixed, it's always a powerful combustion!
David was a 'shorty' in height, but a powerhouse of strength. Keep in mind that this was way before Wheaties appeared in the marketplace. Vitamins even!
Towering above David, Goliath was a giant of a madman - about nine feet tall. His armor alone weighed about 150 pounds. The head of his spear added another 20 pounds to his girth. Yes, Goliath carried his weight around in more ways than one.
David's staff and rock sling were mere vessels that God used when he empowered David. The Deliverer was indeed God.
Note that David chose five smooth stones; yes, David was a smooth operator....
David had every reason in the world to feel overwhelmed and scared - but he also had God in that sling and he faced the enemy bravely, without wavering. David's courage teaches us a great lesson. As Christians, we may at times feel overwhelmed along Life's Pathway.
At that point, we must remember that God is always in the sling of things; He alone will stay His mighty hand over us and lead us into savory victory, just as He did the brave lad, David!
