Devil's Food & Your Diet, Including Recipe TipsAccurately named, devil's food is something that you'll want to steer far away from while dieting. A better option? Angelfood! Anglefood is made from egg whites, a low fat, low calorie alternative that will slip nicely into most any diet plan. If you find that you can't part with devil's food, the following tricks will help lighten up your recipe. Always measure your serving size, because a tiny square of devil's food cake can contain 350 calories or more.
Tips to lighten up the devil's food: Use applesauce to replace oil or butter in the recipe. Use an egg substitute to replace the eggs in the recipe. Use 1/2 sugar and 1/2 Splenda in your recipe rather than 100% sugar. Splenda will hold up to heat whereas other no calorie sweeteners fail miserably. If you desire icing, use LIGHT whipped topping OR fat free whipped topping that has been gently incorporated with the following: 3 Tablespoons of cocoa mixed with 1 Tablespoon of warm water until smooth. Add several packets of Splenda to sweeten. Fold into topping and spread or dollop on devil's food. |
